Wow! The following is just about the most wonderfully unique musical performance I’ve seen in a long, long time.
tUnE-yArDs is Merrill Garbus’ mostly one-woman band (she’s joined on bass by Nate Brenner), and what she’s able to do with a couple of drums, a ukulele, her amazing voice, and a loop pedal is absolutely breathtaking. (Ok, so I’ve checked YouTube and it seems she doesn’t always play in such a minimalist ensemble: see Bizness)
Anyway, I’m becoming increasingly enamored of the performance possibilities opened up by looping technology, how it can enable insanely talented multi-instrumentalists to let it all hang out, without having to depend on bandmates, and I’m reminded of a Video Fridays installment I did almost exactly a year ago, featuring Andrew Bird.
Enjoy!
