Video Monday: Wilco vs. Wilco

wilcologoSo, I wasn’t able to post a Video Fridays installment this past week, the first time missing my self-imposed deadline in so long I can’t remember the last time it happened.

Anyway, to make up for the absence, today I’m posting over two hours of music split between just two YouTube videos.

I haven’t mentioned my favorite band, Wilco, in quite a while, but this morning I came across two full-show concerts of theirs, both from TV shows, Wilco’s first appearance on Austin City Limits in 1999, and a show from 2012 that was broadcast live in Barcelona, Spain.

One thing immediately apparent about these two shows, just after watching the first songs from each, is how different the lineup of the band is between the two. In fact, the only two members that appear in both are frontman Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt. And the most dramatic shift in the band’s lineup, captured in the 2002 documentary film I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, the departure of the now-deceased multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett, really split the Wilco fanbase, with many Bennett fans giving up on the band.

It’s interesting, then, that the Austin City Limits show is from the last tour to include Jay Bennett, and the Barcelona show starts off with a song, Poor Places, from the last album Jay Bennett appeared on: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Now, I’m a rare Wilco fan, I think, who has liked every iteration of the band during their nearly 20-year history, and so I can thoroughly enjoy both of these shows.

Happy Monday, everyone!
