Gnarly

    • Funny you should ask!

This is one of my all-time favorite trees, located on the campus of Western Washington University, my place of employment here in Bellingham, Washington.

It is a Camperdown elm, and I only know that because some generous faculty member built a website that catalogs the trees on campus.

I have no idea how old it is.

As for my relationship to it, like I said, it’s one of my favorites, and I walk past it every single day, sometimes several times a day, and I posted one other shot of it here on the blog, on a rare sunny day back in February.

      Lovely of you to ask!

      • Well, I think your colleague is very remiss in not making a note of the circumstances of the Camperdown elm’s planting. After all, this is a tree of great majesty and presence, of undoubted antiquity and full of stories of its place. A tree of the cloud forest, covered in moss and lichen – oh it certainly is a magnificent tree. And this, the photograph!
