Video Fridays: Pimps of Joytime

One of my favorite things in life is summertime right here in Bellingham, Washington.

We wait patiently, or sometimes not so patiently, through 9 months of wet weather, and when the sun comes out and we have perfect, never-too-hot days, with daylight hours lasting until 9:30pm or later, a warm, fuzzy euphoria sets in, and that’s even before you arrive at one of the best summertime events in Bellingham, the Downtown Sounds outdoor concert series.

Sadly, due to scheduling conflicts, I was only able to make it to one of the five shows this summer, but this one concert, this past Wednesday, was so frickin’ fun that it more than made up for missing the others. That I was accompanied by my 14-year old son, who has been taking his own music pursuits quite seriously lately and is wide open and ready for inspiration, was delicious icing on the cake.

Pimps of Joytime, out of Brooklyn, New York, are the best live band I’ve seen in a long time, offering a non-stop dance groove mix of funk, soul, blues, rock, Latin beats, and more. Ridiculously tight, with a great, soulful, chill vibe, Pimps of Joytime evoked memories of bands like War, Santana, Sly & The Family Stone, just to name a few.

So, if you ever get a chance to catch these guys, don’t hesitate, put on your dancing shoes, and just.plain.go!

Here’s a pretty representative clip, though their lineup has changed a little since.
